Toll For Using Expressways May Be Hiked Across The Country

You may soon have to pay more for driving on roads the government is building with private players across the country.

The department of road transport and highways is framing new toll norms that would allow these private parties to charge extra for any big construction like a long elevated highway or flyover that costs more than Rs 5 crore.

The Centre, however, will enable payment through credit cards, pre-paid cards and advanced chips that will automatically register each time you pass a toll gate with the bill sent later. ``Users may have to pay extra for any big construction that costs over Rs 5 crore on the highways. For instance, L&T is building a sixlane, three kilometre elevated highway near Panipat for about Rs 420 crore. By the time it opens, the new toll rules would be in place and people will have to pay Rs 15 to Rs 20 over and above the toll rates,'' said a senior official.

Under the new norms, overloaded commercial vehicles will also end up paying a hefty fee while people living within 20 km of a toll bridge will be exempted from paying any cess.

The Centre has also asked the NHAI to step up toll collection. ``Last year NHAI collected Rs 350 crore as toll. The 5,846-km Golden Quadrilateral project is almost 97% complete. Wherever four-laning is complete, they must levy toll. We expect the annual toll collection to rise to Rs 1,500 annually,'' road transport and highways secretary Brahm Dutt said.
