Nitish Meets Prime Minister To Drew His Attention Towards Urgent Issues, Seeks Central Assistance
The Chief Minister, Nitish Kumar, met the Prime Minister on Saturday and drew his attention towards certain urgent issues concerning the State. While the CM again impressed upon the PM the need for a Special Package for relief and reconstruction, in view of the devastating floods this year, he also focused on the power scenario in the state as well as the pending issue of compensation to the riot victims of Bhagalpur on the lines of the package for the victims of the Anti Sikh riots. He appealed to the PM for urgent consideration on these issues, so that these do not impinge on the massive developmental efforts undertaken by the state government.
The CM informed the PM, about the relentless efforts made by the state government to provide relief to those who have suffered due to the unprecedented floods this year. He urged him to expedite decision on the special package submitted by the State. The special plan has been prepared seeking an assistance of Rs.17,059 crores. The plan has been conceived in two parts. Part 'A' consists of three components of flood moderation, interlinking of rivers and Road reconstruction amounting to Rs.11677 crores, to be financed, from an Inter-Agency Multilateral Externally Aided Project. Part 'B' of the plan seeks an additional Plan assistance of Rs.4483 crores to mainly take care of housing and some other flood security related expenditure. He brought to the notice of the Prime Minister the criticality of these issues, as the housing needs of those who have suffered in the floods, as well as repair to the damaged infrastructure was of paramount importance in the efforts of the state to pursue its development centric activities. The CM also drew the attention of the PM towards the power scenario of the State and explained to him, how, negligible generation capacity, distributional inefficiencies and inadequate allocation of power was hampering the development of the state. He requested the Prime Minister for an increased additional allocation of power from the central utilities by atleast 300 MW. He also stressed the need for augmenting generating capacity in the state which would inevitably depend on central's clearances of coal linkages as well as allotment of coal blocks to Bihar. He referred to the special task force report where a road map for power development in the state had been submitted to the PM. In order to provide boost to agro industries in Bihar he stressed the importance of an early decision on Bihar's request to provide III phase connection under the Rajiv Gandhi Gramin Vidyutikaran Yojajna.
The CM also drew the attention of the PM towards a long pending request of Govt. of Bihar for approving a package for the Bhagalpur Communal Riot victims on the pattern of a package provided to the 1984 anti-sikh riot victims. The CM referred to his earlier request and urged for the personal intervention of the PM in approving this package, so that those who have suffered in the Bhagalpur communal riots can now look forward to a better life. The CM, Shri Nitish Kumar, also briefed the PM on the several steps the state had already initiated in this direction for the welfare of those who have suffered in the riots.
