All the six government medical colleges in Bihar are on the verge of being derecognised. Despite the Medical Council of India (MCI) inspecting the colleges time and again and pointing out the deficiencies in each of them, none of them have made any effort to comply with the MCI guidelines.
The threat of derecognition is being given to these medical colleges from 1998 onwards. The MCI, after inspecting the colleges, had pointed out several discrepancies including shortage of faculty, paramedical staff, and lack of centralised registration counter. The MCI had instructed the colleges to fulfil the guidelines at the earliest, failing which, the colleges will be derecognised.
Another inspection was done in December 2003, when MCI found that although the colleges had overcome some of their shortcomings, the problem of shortage of teaching staff remained unresolved. The shortage of medical teachers at that time was about 37.2 per cent, said general secretary of the Bihar Medical Teachers Association Dr Rajiv Ranjan Prasad.
