National Panel Issues Guidelines To Schools For Meaningful Programmes on Children's Day
Forget the hackneyed Children's Day celebrations that one has witnessed year after year for so long. This time, it will be all about empowerment as on November 14 a number of schools will hold sessions to familiarize children about their rights.
The National Commission For Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) has issued guidelines to schools, orphanages and juvenile justice homes across the country, asking them to celebrate the rights of children, covering issues related to child abuse, corporal punishment and child labour this Wednesday. ``Children's Day is usually celebrated by organizing a variety of events, the focus being entertainment. However, we felt that there was need for more meaningful programmes on the occasion to send a message to the kids,'' said NCPCR chairperson Shanta Sinha. The Commission has written to chief secretaries of all the states asking them to launch a campaign and interact directly with children in schools, hostels, orphanages, juvenile homes, children's homes and shelter homes on Bal Divas. ``Children need to know about their rights. They should be told how to cope with various issues concerning them. We have suggested that the articles of the UN Convention on Child Rights should be read out in every class, followed by discussion with children. There has been a rise in the number of cases impinging on the rights of children due to lack of awareness among the target group,'' said Sinha. Click on "Full Story" for more... The UN Convention says that children should not be abused or treated unfairly. Schools have been asked to organise plays, musicals and painting competitions displaying the message to curb crimes related to children, and the means they have to speak out against such cases.
``There should be painting and craft competitions keeping child rights as the theme. We are also planning to collect entries from across the country and put up an exhibition of select pieces,'' she added. The NCPCR has also directed that children who have been staying in the juvenile justice homes would be served special food on November 14. ``We will conduct surprise visits to juvenile justice homes to see how these children are treated,'' said NCPCR member Sandhya Bajaj. Though city schools are yet to receive the said directions, they have welcomed the move. ``We haven't received any such instruction to celebrate November 14 as `children rights day' but we plan to organise some events on this theme,'' said Tagore International (Vasant Vihar) principal Madhulika Sen.
