PATNA: Falling mercury levels may give sleepless nights to many, particularly the poor ones, but the inmates of the Patna zoo are going to have a comfortable winter. The zoo authorities have made special arrangements to keep these animals in cozy conditions even if the mercury level falls below the 10 degree C mark this winter.
Giving details, Patna zoo director Rakesh Kumar told TOI on Friday that different kinds of arrangements had been made for carnivorous and herbivorous animals keeping their needs in mind. "We place three-inch thick straw bed in the enclosures where carnivorous animals stay during the night and these beds are changed on regular intervals to maintain the warmth. Straw mats are also placed on all ventilators of these enclosures during the night. Then, blowers are also used if temperature level goes down below 10 degree C mark during peak winter season," Kumar said and added that herbivorous animals are kept under sheds made of straw during nights as they do not need the arrangements made for the carnivorous ones.
