Sleepless nights are a formula for disaster
Feeling Butterflies in your stomach ahead of the Board exams? Relax. Take care of your diet, rest well, stay focussed and beat the stress by optimising your performance.
"Stress is not always bad. In fact, optimal stress helps us prepare for a challenge and give our best. But if you are edgy, experiencing lack of appetite or sleep, or disturbed by nightmares, chances are that you are experiencing psychological stress," says Jitender Nagpal, psychiatrist at Vimhans Hospital. Nagpal says the situation can be handled well if you eat and sleep well, talk to family and friends, and indulge in some favourite pastime to give your brain a break from studies. Eating the right kind of food is important so that your body has the energy to keep up with high-level mental activity. Have light snacks or fruits, besides three full meals high on carbohydrates, proteins and fibres. "A lot of stu dents think that if they eat less, they will be able to stay up late and study more. This is a myth because even the brain needs an essential amount of glucose to function," says Nagpal. Ignoring sleep on a regular basis is a sure-shot recipe for disaster. Counsellors say make sure that you do get your full share of sleep every night. "Do not feel guilty about sleeping for 7-8 hours three weeks before the exams. Even an extra hour or two helps the brain rejuvenate itself," says Etishree Bhatti, counsellor at DPS (R K Puram).
