Lalu's in-laws caught travelling without ticket

While railway minister Lalu Prasad was being praised by UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi during the inauguration of a rail factory at Rae Bareli on Tuesday, back home in Bihar his parentsin-law were being booked for ticketless rail travel.

Former Bihar chief minister Rabri Devi's parents Shiv Prasad Choudhary and Sripati Devi were in an AC first class coach of the Sampark Kranti Express when a ticket-checking team found them without tickets at Chhapra station. The couple had boarded at Hajipur and were going to Siwan.

The incident left both Lalu, his family and railway officials red-faced and groping for excuses. Not surprisingly, railway officials vanished from the scene when the media confronted Choudhary and his wife at Siwan station.

Sources said while the ticket checking team of East Central Railway did not disturb the elderly couple, it was another team of North Eastern Railway zone NER jurisdiction starts from Chhapra which caught them.

It's a conspiracy, says Lalu's aide
Railway minister Lalu Prasad's parents-in-law were being booked for ticketless rail travel on Tuesday. His fatherin-law Shiv Prasad Choudhary told the ticket checker that he and his wife were ill and were returning from Patna after a health check-up. He pleaded that he did not have a ticket as the man who had come to see them off had forgotten to hand him the tickets.

However, when Choudhary revealed his identity, the ticket checker became nervous. He charged them a penalty and issued tickets. An angry Choudhary told reporters after getting down from the train at Siwan station that they had tickets. He accused the media of hounding them for a juicy story which had no basis. He, however, refused to show the tickets even as his wife threatened reporters with a lathi. The elderly couple later left for their native village, Salarkelar, in Gopalganj district. Though their daughter Rabri did not react to the news, railway minister's private secretary Bhola Yadav described the brouhaha as a conspiracy to defame the railway minister.

What he gave as an explanation for travelling without tickets was, however, different. ``They boarded the train at Hajipur without tickets because the train was about to leave. They got their tickets issued by the TTE inside the train."

When contacted, the railways came up with another version. North Eastern Railway's chief PRO M K Singh told TOI that the couple had second class tickets and wanted to get them converted to AC first class.
