Lalu claims credit for Railway's turnaround
Ruling out privatisation of core activities, railway minister Lalu Prasad today said the Railways would be put on faster growth track with improved passenger amenities. The top priority would be given their safety. Winding up the discussion on the railway Budget 2007-08 in the Rajya Sabha, he said that Railways was taking steps to fill backlog of vacancies for weaker sections. The House approved by a voice vote the vote on account for railways, providing for expenditure of Rs 7,579 crore for the first few months of 2007-08.
He said the Railways would take steps to provide hygienic and safe food, palatable to the taste of regional passengers. He rejected the Opposition claim that turnaround was based on the initiatives of the previous government. The minister said the world, including top business schools of the US, was lauding the railways' turnaround. By Dr arvind, Section News Posted on Thu Mar 15, 2007 at 05:25:23 AM EST
The House was adjourned twice during the minister's reply following pandemonium as the Opposition strongly protested his comment on corruption during the previous NDA regime. The House was first adjourned for 15 minutes and then again for half-an-hour as the Opposition members demanded that the rail minister withdraw his charge.
The BJP took strong exception to the minister's remark that though loading on same scale was done; it was shown to be underweight in return for money. The BJP members demanded that since the minister was making a grave charge he should substantiate his allegation or withdraw it. BJP leader Yashwant Sinha said being a minister, Lalu Prasad should not indulge in making a general comment but specify and prove his `grave charge'. The minister asserted he had not made any charge against any party or leader of the NDA and had said that loading was shown as underweight for which he had punished officials. Earlier, BJP leader Sushma Swaraj sought to counter Prasad's claims that the Railways was showing surplus of Rs 20,000 crore despite any substantial increase in passenger and freight fares. She said 30 per cent of rail tickets of all trains in the country were now being sold under the `tatkal' scheme against 10 per cent earlier and counters were closed after 70 per cent of tickets were sold. She said premium on such tickets had increased by three times in various classes and charges for cancellation of ticket and the service tax had been hiked. From: Tribune, March-15,07
