Mega Assam Bridge to be Ready by 2012
The Rs 1,700-crore mega rail-cum-road bridge in Assam is expected to be completed by 2012. The project will be developed jointly by the Railways and the ministry of shipping, road transport and highways.
“The ministry of shipping, road transport and highways will construct the approach to the bridge at Bogibeel. The bridge over the Brahmaputra itself would be constructed by the Railways,” a government official said. The project was announced as a national project in Budget 2007-08. The bridge, which will be 4,315 metres long, would have an approach road of nearly 25 km that would be developed by the ministry of shipping, road transport and highways. Any escalation in cost would be provided for by the Centre. By sachiv, Section News Posted on Tue Apr 03, 2007 at 06:28:51 AM EST
With the government declaring the Bogibeel bridge as a national project, the flow of funds from the Centre is likely to speed up work. The bridge would provide linkages between upper Assam and the rest of the region.
The north-east has been given priority in infrastructure development. The total Budget allocation in 2007-08 for the North Eastern region, has increased from Rs 12,041 crore in 2006-07 to Rs 14,365 crore in 2007-08. This includes Rs 1,380 crore provided to the ministry of development of North Eastern region (DONER). The Cabinet has also recently given its clearance to the new industrial policy for the region. The last Railway Budget had made a provision of Rs 500 crore for speeding up the progress of construction of Bogibeel bridge, road-cum-rail bridges over river Ganga at Digha near Patna and at Munger and rail bridge over river Kosi at Nirmali in Bihar. The ongoing construction of road-cum-rail bridge in Digha over the Ganga is also expected to be completed soon.
