Nearly 90,000 elementary schools across the country do not have a blackboard, says a new government survey.
While 7.37 per cent schools in rural areas did not have blackboards, about 9.06 per cent schools in urban areas lacked this facility, said the report 'Elementary Education in India: State Report Cards 2005-06' prepared by the education think-tank National University of Educational Planning and Administration (NUEPA).
Of the schools without blackboards, 21,699 also did not have teachers, the study revealed.
Of the 11,24,033 schools in 35 states and Union Territories covered by the survey, 87.23 per cent was in rural areas and about 83 per cent of the total schools was run by the government.
In absolute terms, the highest number of primary schools without blackboards were in Rajasthan (8,848) followed by Jharkhand (7,645) and Bihar (5,535), the report said.
