Patna Conmen Turn Focus On Filmmakers

"HUM rail mantri ke niwas se bol rahen hain. Aapka naam shortlist kiya gaya hai, Indian Railways par documentary banane ke liye. Rs 1.5 crore kaa project hai (I am calling from the Railway Minister's residence. Your name has been shortlisted for making a documentary on the Railways. It's a Rs 1.5-crore project)."

This was the kind of break Mumbai-based documentary filmmaker Arpita Ghosh had been waiting for. Despite the doubts at the back of her mind, she flew down to Patna for striking the deal with "top railway authorities". "The caller, Manish Rai, who introduced himself as being close to Lalu Prasad Yadav, sounded convincing."

However, by the time she realised that she has been duped, it was too late. The conman had already relieved her of over Rs 50,000. "I just cannot make out how I fell into the trap. But I feel relieved that I came out safely," Ghosh told The Indian Expressover phone.

In the past few months at least three aspiring filmmakers from Mumbai have been duped in a similar fashion. While these three instances have been reported to the police, it is feared that many more might have passed off unregistered due to the embarrassment involved. Though those behind the first two instances could not be nabbed, two persons were arrested when they tried to rob young filmmaker Preetam Vaidya of cash and equipment.

Like Ghosh, Mumbaibased Preetam was contacted over phone and offered a lucrative project to make a documentary film on Railway Minister. Convinced that the deal was final, the filmmaker flew to Patna last Sunday.

Two youths received him in a luxury vehicle and then drove him out of Patna promising a meeting with Lalu at his native village. "After some time they demanded Rs 5 lakh. When I said that it was in my briefcase, they snatched it and pushed me out of the car," he said. Later, the police laid a trap to nab the culprits who called the filmmaker again on not finding money in his briefcase.

Senior SP Kundan Krishnan said they have received three similar complaints in the past few months and were trying to ascertain whether the same set of persons were behind all the cases. He said after Ghosh, Rajesh Grover, owner of Mumbai-based ad agency Wiscomm, had also been duped. "Grover was duped of Rs 20,000 by a person who introduced himself as Manoj Rai, a close aide of the Railway Minister," the SSP said.
