The Bihar government today set up a Mahadalit Commission to improve the conditions of economically, socially and educationally backward Dalits and bring them into the mainstream of society.
A notification appointing former welfare minister Vishwanath Rishideo as chairman of the Commission was issued during the day, an official attached to the chief minister's secretariat said.
Chief Minister Nitish Kumar had announced on independence day that his government was contemplating the setting up of a Mahadalit Commission for the welfare and development of Dalits.
Senior IAS officer K P Rammaiah, besides functioning as Commissioner of Magadh Range, will be the Secretary of the Commission, the official said. Rajendra Prasad Nat, an advocate of Patna High Court, social worker Babban Rawat and Chotelal Rjvanshi were appointed as members of the Commission.
