State Fails To Impress Italian Envoy

Italy's ambassador to India Antonio Armellini on Saturday sought to know from the state government and local industrialists about the incentive for Italians to invest in Bihar. Armellini said Bihar do not even have basic infrastructural facilities like power, road, air cargo, besides proper law and order to attract Italian business interest.

However, the Italian envoy said that there was a scope for "business to business interaction" between Italy and Bihar in the fields of agro-food processing and infrastructure. He also said that trade between India and Italy was bound to improve from the current level of $ 4.5 billion to $ 10 billion by the end of the year.

Amrellini also did not appear impressed by a detailed presentation made by principal secretary (industries) S Vijay Raghavan or the speeches made by the members of state chapter of the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), Bihar Industries Association (BIA) chief K P S Keshri and CII Bihar state council chairman Satyajit Singh.

Armellini along with other members of an Italian delegation visiting the state was having an interactive session with the members of CII, leading industrialists of the state and principal secretary of the state industries department here on Saturday.

Italian envoy made his point clear on "divergence of approach" between the two parties -- Bihar and Italy -- saying Bihar's approach was production-oriented whereas it was export-oriented in case of Italy. BIA president Keshri, principal secretary, industries, Raghavan, CII state chief Singh and Adri member secretary Shaibal Gupta, tried their level best to put forward their point that the face of Bihar was changing with the change of guards two years ago and things were improving.

Raghavan said that the state government has created an industry-friendly environment conducive to industrial growth and field of food processing, leather, pharmaceutical and textile were the major areas where Italy and Bihar could go for collaborations.

CII chief Singh also pointed towards the rich cultural and historical heritage of Bihar which could be an ideal destination for Italian and European tourists. He expressed his hope that the visit of the Italian delegation to Bihar would herald a new beginning of close trade and cultural ties between the people of Bihar and Italy.
