Retired IPS officer Kiran Bedi Opens Website For Complaints "www.saferindia.com"
About 11.5 lakh calls were made to the Delhi Police Control Room in 2007. The actual number of criminal cases registered stood at just 55,244
Retired IPS officer Kiran Bedi on Thursday said the lowering crime graph in the country's many states merely reflects the increasing non-registration of criminal cases and launched a website for the common man to tackle this 'unjust' treatment at the police's hands. "Whatever the various states' police tell you, the fact remains that several erimes go unreported just because the police refuse to register them," said Bedi, while launching the website, www.saferindia.com. All complaints lodged on this website would be forwarded to police chiefs of the respective states. Bedi's announcement came a day after the Delhi police made public the city's annual 'lowering' crime graph. Bedi pointed out her observations about nonregistration of cases weren't restricted to a particular city. Delhi's crime records, however, did get a mention during the website's launch. The panelists said close to 11.5 lakh calls were made to the Delhi's Police Control Room in 2007. The actual number of criminal cases regis- tered stood at just 55,244, a decline of 1881 from 2006. "People don't call up the police to tell them about their power or water woes. The cases registered are far disproportionate to the number of calls received," said Dr Arvind Verma, retired IPS and a professor at Indiana University, US. Click on "Full Story" for more... Bedi said no police force properly analyses all the complaints made at PCR and police stations.
At times, police settle crime incidents like snatching, thefts, assault and vehicle theft among others by affecting a compromise between the accused and the victim, she said. Conceding this may be due to shortage of staff, Bedi said law and order shouldn't be made a casualty in the process by letting criminals go scot-free. The new website that was launched under the aegis of Bedi's non-governmental organisation - India Vision Foundation is pegged as a forum for grievance redressal. "All those whose grievances have not been well looked into by the police can register on the website. The complaint would then be forwarded to the police chiefs only if the complaints seem genuine," said Bedi. The website will not function as parallel policing. People can use the website only if a formal complaint at their respective police stations goes unheard. "We will not undertake any follow up action. We are just providing a means to citizens to convey their grievances to the police top brass. A decision on providing further facilities will be taken only after a few months," said Bedi.
