Right To Information Act (RTI), The Weapon To Root Out Corruption
A Tax official exposed corruption in his own department and a man got compensation for land acquired before Independence after waiting for 18 years, thanks to the Right to Information Act.
A little over two years after implementation - the act came into force in June 2005 -RTI, as it is commonly known, has become Indian's most handy tool to expose corruption, cut through red tape and redress grievances.

Srivastay filed applications not only with his own department but also with Indian Airlines and the railway ministry. Click on "Full Story" For More... By Dr arvind, Section News Posted on Fri Jan 04, 2008 at 03:13:39 AM EST
"The case is just the tip of the iceberg. I took a lot of time to expose the irregularity, but thanks to RTI, I got information that I would not have got otherwise," Srivastav said.
Replies from different sources exposed that how lower level tax officials misled their seniors by telling them that no train reservation was available. In fact, the railways told Srivastay that no reservation was done by the income-tax department when seats were available on the given day. Information Commissioner O.E Kejriwal cited a case of a petitioner who waited for 18 years to get compensation for a plot acquired before Independence. The case was resolved through a RTI plea. The Central Information Commission had imposed a penalty of Rs 50,000 on the government department concerned. Chief Information Commissioner Wajahat Habibullah said the use of RTI as a grievance redress mechanism was not unexpected, at least by activist groups. "We have noticed that RTI now is being largely used by the people for getting details of delayed passports, ration cards, land allotment, denial of pension and so on. And while the information commission is clear on the purpose of the RTI Act, in such cases where there is a violation of law, we can certainly help." Source: Hindustan Times, Jan-04-2008
