L-G Khanna Rolls Back Identity Card Plan,Cabinet And Party Leaders Oppose Move.
Widespread Political criticism forced Delhi Lt.-Governor Tejendra Khanna to take back the decision on mandatory carrying of photo-identity cards by the people of Delhi and validation of other states' driving licenses.
Khanna made a U-turn after the entire Delhi Cabinet, led by Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit, met him at Raj Niwas on Monday The Delhi Cabinet prevailed on the LG that the move was "politically disastrous" in an election year Dikshit herself requested the L-G to make a clarification in the media. This was followed by another delegation of Members of Parliament from Delhi. Several MPs, led by state Congress President J.E Agarwal, wanted the LG to take back the decision.
LOOPHOLES Harassmentat the hands of police would have only increased and so would have corruption. The move would have recalled regimes of the past where movement from one city to the other was made very difficult. People from Delhi going to other states would have faced harassment at the hands of their police. A state within a state would have been created in Delhi where the national Capital was made to look like a police state. Someone driving from one part of the country would have been stopped in Delhi as his license was from the other state. This was against the Central Motor Vehicles Act, passed by the Parliament as licenses issued in any indian state are valid throughout the country. Click on "Full Story" For More.... Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar had already written a letter to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, objecting to Khanna's announcement on I-cards and saying that it was a sinister design to target people from Bihat The letter was a scathing criticism of the decision.
Delhi Congress President Agarwal said, "We told the L-G that if implemented, it will only lead to harassment of people at the hands of the police. Delhi BJP president Harsh Vardhan said he had written to the Prime Minister to start a campaign to issue multi purpose I-cards to all Indian citizens.
Asked if the rollback of the decision was being done under political pressure, Khanna said that whatever he said earlier was misinterpreted in the media. "We do not want any harassment of the people of the city We just want them to be law-abiding and security-conscious when terrorist activities are taking place," he said.
