New Schemes For Minorities To Extend Help To All The Needy Members Of Minority Community

The minority welfare department on Sunday kicked off three new schemes for the minorities, women and students and vowed to extend help to all the needy members of the minority community.

Chief minister Nitish Kumar, who gave away cheques to some of the beneficiaries, said the Bihar State Minorities Financial Corporation (BSMFC) has to come up to his expectations.
At a function here, Nitish distributed term loan at minimum rate of interest, financial assistance of Rs 10,000 to divorced or deserted women and incentive money of an equal amount to all the students of minority community securing first division in matric in Patna district.

Women in burqas went up to the dais to receive their cheques, while Nitish walked down to give cheque to a physically handicapped Rumi Khatoon sitting among the audience. Sikh and Buddhists, both men and women, were among the beneficiaries. The term loan has been given for starting small business and the financial assistance to needy and poor women for self-employment. Nitish said these women can learn some skill under the `Hunar' scheme and they will be helped in starting their own business in future.

"It's just the beginning and the amount we are giving to them is not sufficient," said Nitish. He asked the BSMFC to create a record of giving assistance. Since its inception 21 years ago, the BSMFC has distributed only Rs 15.57 crore while only during the last three years almost an equal amount has been distributed.

"This corporation should not be limited only to its signboard or be discussed at the functions of the minorities," said Nitish, adding that he has raised BSMFC fund from Rs 10 to Rs 20 crore.
Nitish said he knows the level of education is lowest among the Muslims and that is the reason he made the policy to give those passing matric in first division incentive money without any discrimination. "Several people have opposed this move and some even went to the court to challenge this, but this scheme will stay because I have formulated this after much thought," he declared.

When Minority Commission chairman Naushad Ahmad was speaking some people from the audience raised the issue of encroachment of graveyards. Nitish, while concluding his speech, asked them to stay and give their complaints to minority welfare principal secretary Afzal Amanullah who also heads the home department. Amanullah promised that action will be taken to remove the encroachments.

Nitish said he was confident that the poor people being given term loan will return it. He said, "Poor people are honest and they don't run away with the money. This is the habit of big people who ditch the banks and usurp big amount of money, but the banks do not go after them."

Minority welfare minister Shahid Ali Khan said so far the minorities have been emotionally blackmailed, but the previous government did little for them.

Amanullah said it has been noticed that the people of this community do not get benefit of the government schemes. Ahmad complimented that all the schemes for the minorities were the brain child of Nitish.
