Patna Zoo Has Something To Be Proud, World No 2 In Rhino Count

Patna zoo has something to be proud of. With 11 Indian one-horned variety, the city zoo is second to California's San Diego Animal Park which has
54.

Central Zoo Authority (CZA) has declared Patna zoo as the top breeding centre of rhinos. The first pair of rhinos was brought here from Assam back in 1979. Patna zoo started breeding in 1988.

"It's not easy. We have to take extra care to get the right kind of environment and diet to breed animals like rhinos. As a result, we get baby rhinos every year," a zoo official said.

Patna zoo has also become a breeding centre for 'gharial'. The 39-year-old Patna zoo, spread over 153 acres, has earned Rs 1.64 crore revenue in 2007.

In 2005, Patna zoo had exchanged three giraffes from San Diego Animal Park.

"We have given them two Indian single-horned Rhino," Patna zoo deputy director Subhash Chandra Verma said. "We had exchanged a male rhino to Delhi zoo in 2004-05," he added.

Now, Indian rhino and gharial have become the USP of Patna zoo. "We are ready to give rhinos if somebody offers us Asiatic lion, Chimpanzee and a pair of tigers," an official said.

At present, three tigers (one male and two females) 11 big gharials and 100 small ones are available in Patna zoo.

"We have written to the prominent zoos offering them to gift gharials. We have already gifted six gharials to Vizag zoo in 2006," the deputy director said.

Gharial comes under the category of 'schedule one' animal. Now it is increasingly been difficult to keep 'gharials' in a big number.

"We have sent a rehabilitation plan for 'gharials' to Bihar government. They are found in Ganga and Gandak rivers. So it is better to allow them enjoy its natural habitation," said an official.
