Fresh Plea For Central University Status To Patna University, Take Political Turn

teachers have once again reiterated their old demand for conversion of this university into a Central university and urged the leaders of different political parties to jointly take up this issue with the Central government.

Welcoming the recent government move for setting up a world class university at Motihari, Patna University Teachers' Association president Upendra Kishore Sinha said that steps should also be initiated for converting PU, the seventh oldest in the country, into a Central university.

The state government has already made up its mind for doing the needful for upgrading PU into a Central university. PU has got about 300 acres of land in its possession and the government has agreed to provide additional land, if required. The Central government had asked the state government to make 500 acres of land for establishing a new Central university in and around Patna.

The state government has already informed the Centre that acquiring 500 acres of land in and around congested Patna would not be feasible, hence it would be better to convert PU into a Central university, which has been a long cherished desire of the people of the state.

Sinha has urged the politicians to champion the cause of PU in the same spirit as they did recently on the Maharashtra issue.

Meanwhile, Patna Law College will establish Justice K B N Singh Memorial Law Research Centre on its premises for promoting legal research activities in PU. A decision to this effect was taken at the PU's Academic Council meeting held here on Monday. Justice Samarendra Pratap Singh, son of late Justice K B N Singh, has donated a sum of Rs 51,000 as token money for initiating the establishment of the centre.

Law College principal Rakesh Verma told TOI that necessary space and infrastructure for the proposed centre have already been created. A committee of academicians has been constituted to decide the details of the modalities, he added.
