National Book Fair Draws Huge Crowd At Gandhi Maidan

Classics, competitive exam guidelines,religion,biographies,dictionaries...everything sells at National Book Fair here. Large crowds gather at Gandhi Maidan, the venue of two `national book fairs'.

Even the stall of the Haryana Police Academy at the National Book Fair, organised by National Book Trust (NBT), with its publication on sensitising the police and empowering the people is drawing good crowd. "The crowds are responsive and come to our stall and hold long discussions with us on various issues related to policing," remarked head constable of the academy Ram Kumar.

The academy has come up with its stall in Bihar for the first time at the fair. Its books, `Lodging FIR', `Third Degree and Police' and other related subjects have drawn curious onlookers even as Kumar pointed out that their main aim was not sale of books, but create awareness. The academy personnel even give questionnaire to the visitors in which questions related to rights, laws and gender bias are asked.

Do you think it is right to suspect the servant when a theft occurs? What are the rules and laws against not giving minimum wages?, Does the husband have the right to throw out his wife from his house?...are some of the question figuring in the questionnaire.

"We actually carry out surveys with these questionnaires at book fairs and even publish reports on the findings of these surveys," Kumar pointed out. He said that a Bihar ADG rank official and a few Bihar police constables have visited their stall.

Classics are in great demand. "The classic written by Dharamveer Bharati `Gunaho Ke Devta' has sold like hot cakes," remarked Anjani Kumar Mishra, senior marketing officer of Bharatiya Gyanpith Publication. He said that the book has already 90 editions. "A large number of visitors come asking for classics," he said and insisted that Patna was one of the best locations for selling books. "Perhaps it is because there is no industry here and people earn their livelihood through gaining knowledge," he said.
Another classic in demand at the fair is Harivansh Rai Bachhan's `Madhushala'. "We sold 50 copies of it the very first day on Saturday. We have brought 500 copies and I think not a single one of them will remain unsold," remarked manager of Rajpal Publication Sureshanand Sharma. He pointed out that another classic of Acharya Chatursen was also doing brisk business. "The biographies of Benazir Bhotto and A P J Abdul Kalam are also being sold and there is a demand for books for children," he added.

Orient University Press dictionaries are in demand and are doing brisk business. The autobiography of Kalam, `Wings of Fire', published by the Orient Blackswan Publications is also in demand and so is the classic written by Khushwant Singh, `Train to Pakistan'. "Lately, there has been a huge demand for spoken English books in Patna," remarked Ajay K Lall, sales executive of the publication.

Gandhi Maidan is currently attracting anything between 20,000 to 30,000 visitors everyday. They come from various sections of the society, including literature lovers, students, teachers and readers of pocket books. "There is space for the third book fair to be held here in December," remarked Rajendra Rajan the organiser of the other national book fair.
