Layoffs Days In Global Meltdown ,6,500 Jobs On Offer for Biharis At Pvt Firms' Fair

Amid reports of layoffs in these days of global meltdown, Bihar, always famous as the land of the educated and the talented, will see at least three dozen companies offering jobs to 6,500 Biharis during the two days beginning Wednesday.

As the second employment-cum-counselling fair opened in the city on Wednesday, thousands of job seekers, armed with their resume, appeared at the interviews.

The first such fair was held in August in which 26 companies with 2,500 vacancies participated. All the vacancies were then filled, and appointment letters to several of them were handed by CM Nitish Kumar.

The chief minister and deputy chief minister Sushil Kumar Modi, in their speeches at the second job fair, referred to the paradox of job cuts across the world and new job opportunities for Bihar youth. "In the coming days too, Bihar will provide good job opportunities. The meltdown will have little impact here as we are going ahead with our remedial plan of maximum public spending," Nitish said.

Modi said the state's NDA government, during its three years, has given jobs to 3.11 lakh people, and this number will touch five lakh-mark by the end of its five-year tenure. Both of them called upon the youth to develop employable skills as well as strong will power and commitment. "If I can reach this position (chief minister's post), why can't you achieve your goals?" Nitish asked.

Addressing the representatives of the companies, Nitish told them Biharis are hard-working and loyal lot. "They don't cheat, they don't beg and they don't shirk," he said and added he can give it in writing.

Nitish also invited the IT companies to open their units in Bihar as production here would be cheaper than that in Bangalore. "And nobody will disturb you... If anybody dares do so, he will be sent to the place where he should be," he said.

"Sky is the limit," Nitish told the job seekers and advised them not to feel inferior to anybody. He said despite odds, the quality of human resources is high in Bihar and Biharis would prove more intelligent than the national average, if any such survey is held.

The companies, which are here with job offers, include India Software Technology, Delhi; Career Catalyst, HDFC Standard Life Insurance, Wipro, Kolkata; ICICI Prudential Life Insurance, Birla Sun Life Insurance, Bajaj Allianz, Max Newyork, Maurya, Coca Cola, Team Lease Staffing Solution, Kolkata; Zentac CareerComns Consulting, ENERCON India Ltd and Pioneer Group of companies. They are offering jobs in the pay scales of Rs 10,000 to Rs 40,000 per month.

"Making provision for about 9,000 jobs in private sector in a span of just four months is a big achievement of the state government," said labour resources minister Awadhesh Singh.
