Such an unfortunate incident has never taken place during my long stint in politics - and that too at a place to which I belong. Nitish Kumar, Bihar Chief Minister
Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar had to face mob fury on Friday when he visited the site for the proposed Nalanda International University at Pilkhi village under Rajgir police station in Nalanda district.
People threw lumps of earth at him in protest against procedural delays in grant of compensation for the farmland acquired by the government and alleged bribes were demanded by Revenue Department officials to prepare their mutation papers.
The farmers who have been denied compensation even after six months of land acquisition by the government found it an opportune time to raise their demands when they came to know that Chief Minister Nitish Kumar along with former President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, was to inspect the site for the proposed university on Friday.
"The chief minister was not attacked but only shown lumps of earth by a group of agitators," said one Kumar's secretaries. He said the CM spoke to the people and pacified them.
The secretary, however, admitted there was a mild baton charge by the police to disperse the agitators.
Later speaking to mediapersons, Kumar expressed surprise at the incident, saying "such an unfortunate incident has never taken place during my long stint in politics - and that too at a place to which I belong."
"Obstacles like these may come in the path of Bihar's development and I am prepared to face them," he said.
The government has acquired 446 acres of land for the proposed university that is being set up with international collaboration close to the site of the ancient Nalanda University.
