Mundeshwari: Oldest Functional Temple In India A Must Visit
The Mundeshwari Temple is claimed to be the oldest functional temple in India. From its stone inscriptions it is evident that the temple was present in 600 AD. For those visiting Varanasi or Bodh Gaya, it is a must visit.
LET ME take you on a tour to Mundeshwari Temple. Very few people know this name and even fewer visit this place as a tourist destination. Most people who come here are devotees of the goddess. When I first visited the temple complex in 1993 it was a totally different scene than it is today. Last week I visited this temple. It is 22 kilometres from the GT Road that links Varanasi to Gaya. From Mohania, it is 60 kilometres from Varanasi, and one has to turn towards the right entering through the Mundeshwari Gate. Compared to the general impression about the much-cursed roads of Bihar the roads are better. After driving a 22 kolimetre stretch along rural areas on reaching the foot of the hill there is a guest house of the Bihar government and a good number of prasad shops. Your four-wheeler can reach the hilltop if you are visiting the place in the off-season. But in the mela seasons you will have to park your vehicle in the parking lot at the foot of hills and walk up. There is a properly built staircase, covered with asbestos and steel railings on two sides taking care of your safety and comfort, which leads you to the temple situated atop the 600 feet Kaimoor hill. You should be able to climb the stairs if you want to reach there within 45 minutes of starting without taking any rest. Otherwise I would suggest you walk on the ramp road which is much easier than climbing the stairs. But you should have a bottle of water with you because on the roadside there are no water vendors. The roadside walking is better also because of its attractive scenery and landscape, surrounded from all sides with green trees and thorny bushes. The plateau is quite wide and flat open. Ruins of a grand artistic temple are visibly spread all around over the plateau. Stone pillars and parts of stone walls and stone roofs and domes, are scattered all around. The remaining octagonal garbha griha (sanctum sanctorum) of the temple is just a small portion of the grand old temple. This garbha griha was originally surrounded with a huge parikrama the roof of which was built on stone pillars and there was a huge dome over this garbha griha which is seen nowhere at present. The temple has four doors. At present only the south door is open for exit and the west door is open for entry. Most of the time the west door is closed and only the south door is open. The remaining two doors are kept closed. Click on "Full Story" For More... By Shruti, Section News Posted on Thu Mar 20, 2008 at 04:19:18 AM EST
In the middle of the temple There is a two feet high Shiva linga above which there is four-headed idol of Mahamandaleshwar Shiva. This idol was earlier broken from its neck and only the broken Shiva linga was there, the top of which was wrapped with a red cloth. Later on somewhere around 1995 the head of the idol was searched out from the ruins and was fixed at the top of the Shiva linga. By the right side of this idol at the eastern gate the five feet high idol of goddess Mundeshwari is kept at present, which was originally kept in some other part of the grand old temple. By the right side of the idol of goddess, just at the steps of the eastern gate, there is a five feet high stone kund (tub) the lip of which is broken. There is a rectangular tub of stone, which is approximately 4 x 4 feet in width and one foot in depth that is kept outside the temple at present.
The stone walls of the temple are decorated by beautiful stone carved images of Ganga - Yamuna and gatekeepers. There is a large statue of Nandi outside the western gate of the temple. A huge idol of lord Ganesha is presently kept just inside the north gate of the temple. It is believed that the original temple was actually the abode of many other gods and goddess and in different parts of the temple different idols were established. It is not clear as to how the temple got damaged. There is clear evidence of stones being broken by humans. Natural disaster may also be responsible for the damage but most evidences reveal the human hand in damaging the temple. The temple is presently under the administration and management of ASI. It is being claimed to be the oldest functional temple in India. It is said this temple was in existence in 635 AD. The Bihar government has also done good work for developing this area, and also for development of the temple. I have heard that the Bihar State Board of Religious Trusts has earmarked Rs 2.4 crore for the renovation and restoration of the temple and the tourism ministry of the Bihar government has promised to build a ropeway for visitors to reach the top of the hill easily. It is still doubtful as to who among the two major idols is primary in the temple - Mahamandaleshwar Shiva or goddess Mundeshwari. Owing to the popular belief and the fact that all prominent devi temples are on hilltops in India it can be said it is a temple of goddess where Mahamandaleshwar is secondary. But the present remains oft he temple show Mahamandaleshwar in the center of the temple and the idol of goddess seems secondary. Also there is an idol of Nandi outside the temple, which is usually outside a Shiva temple. In the records of Bihar government the temple is known as Mundeshwari temple but in the records of ASI it is named Mundeshwari or Mandaleshwar temple. Whatever may be the fact, the scenery, the locality, the hill areas, and the grand old temple and its stone carvings are so tempting that it becomes a must visit. I have been there thrice. The more I visit the more I am informed. Every time I come to know certain new things about the temple. Tourists heading towards Gaya from Varanasi should try to find time to visit this site. I am sure everybody will enjoy the visit. Source:Chandra Shekhar Singh,www.Merinews.com
