In the coming academic year all the existing IITs will be implementing 9 pc OBC quota. But the three upcoming IITs in Bihar, Andhra Pradesh and Rajasthan will implement the entire 27 pc OBC quota at once.
However, the cutoffs have been fixed up for OBC at 90 pc for General category students. It is decided in the meeting held here on Wednesday that, quota implementation in the existing IITs would be implemented by 2010.
Moreover, according to the director's of the IITs, it was difficult and hard to increase the number of seats from the coming academic session to maintain the standards.
Adding to it, Mr. Surendra Prasad, Director, IIT Delhi, said, "We would have preferred it if the new IITs were started next year. We need more teachers and infrastructure. We will require recurring funding from the government to make extra classrooms, laboratories and hostels in the next two years. At present, some IITs have adequate infrastructure to place 13 pc extra students but others will have to manage.
However, we will not compromise on quality", further he added that, "In IIT Delhi, there are 556 posts for teachers as of now. About 300 more teachers will be required by 2010".
The three new upcoming IITs are thus believed to be having 120 seats each, of which 49.5 pc will be reserved. It is also said that these upcoming IITs will be 'mentored' by IITs at Delhi and Kanpur.
