Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad (IIM-A) Grads Help Bihar Set Up B- School

Bihar is not getting an Indian Institute of Management (IIM) like its neighbouring state Jharkhand.

However, some graduates of IIM-A have charted a course and are helping the government of Bihar to set up a management institute in Patna with support from IIM-A faculty members.

IIM-A alumni Abhinav Jain, Amit Kumar, Rahul Roushan, Kartik Laxman, Akshat Khare, Kaushlendra and Mayank Premi from Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi, are applying their management skills to develop Chandragupta Institute of Management, Patna, (CIMP), Bihar, on the lines of IIM-A.

While Rahul, Karthik, Akshat and Kaushlendra will help out with strategy and operations of CIMP, Mayank, Amit and Abhinav will take part in shaping the curriculum and teaching process of the institute.

"We would also like to explore the opportunity of having CIMP students as interns in future," said Mayank, who along with Amit and Abhinav runs an advisory services firm.

This development took place after Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar made his appearance at an annual business summit held by IIM-A in November 2006, and had a closed-door interaction with students from his home state.

During his brief stay, Kumar held some preliminary discussions with the then IIM-A director Bakul Dholakia and faculty members for necessary "advice and guidance" for the setting up of the management institution on the pattern and standard of IIMs in Patna. CIMP will start its first academic year from July 2008. Last week, experts from IIM-A had visited Patna to evaluate the prospects of building a grand library under the aegis of CIMP.

CIMP's administrative structure, course curriculum and pedagogy have been modelled on the lines of IIM-A. Even its library is being constructed with the help of IIM-A. Roushan, who is part of the project team, said, "IIM-A students, especially those hailing from Bihar, used to discuss how to help the state come out of its backwardness."

"One thing was quite clear that brain drain had to be stopped and for that local centres of excellence and opportunities have to be created. CIMP is an important step towards that and we are getting support from those who do not hail from Bihar but who believe in the cause," added Roshan.

Director, CIMP, V Mukundadas, stated that IIM-A has agreed in principle to support CIMP with its technical expertise in setting up the library, although a formal announcement is yet to be made by the authorities in this regard. Professor Piyush Kumar Sinha, chairman, placement committee at IIM-A, is one of the key members involved in the shaping up of CIMP.
