The stage is set for launching the long-awaited Aryabhatt Centre for Creative Learning in Science at Patna Science College. Aimed at motivating the science teachers of Bihar colleges towards laboratory works, the centre is going to be formally inaugurated by science and technology minister Shahid Ali Khan on Monday.
Patna University Academic Council has approved the regulations regarding the functioning of this centre. And the Science College authorities have made necessary arrangements for the stay and practical training of the participants drawn from different colleges and universities of the state, said college principal S N Guha.
This innovative centre, a Raj Bhawan initiative, is supposed to organise workshops for college teachers teaching science subjects in different educational institutions across the state at regular intervals. The participants would be trained in modern teaching methodology, including e-learning, and provide all the facilities for experimental work. It has been observed that science students are not given practical training in different subjects at Plus Two level owing to various constraints making them disinterested in science classes. The centre would motivate the teachers to create interest among students in science classes through sufficient laboratory work.
It may be mentioned here that most institutions in the state have been awarding degrees in science subjects to those students who neither performed a single experiment nor visited a laboratory during the entire period of the course. This is simply because teachers fail to motivate students to carry out lab exercise. Science teachers would be motivated at the workshop to attract students to laboratories by demonstrating simple and interesting experiments.
The first week-long workshop in physics is being attended by about 30 teachers from colleges of Tilka Manjhi Bhagalpur, L N Mithila and Magadh universities.
It has been decided that the vacant Newton House of Patna Science College would provide residential accommodation to the outside participants during the period of training.
