The state government is planning to build a new colony for ministers and legislators in a bid to overcome the perennial problem of providing suitable accommodation to people's representatives. Mediapersons would also be provided accommodation in the same colony.
"We have decided in principle to set up the colony on seven acres of land at Gardanibagh," said building construction minister Chhedi Paswan. He said lack of accommodation is a major problem and it is always difficult to provide suitable houses to ministers and legislators.
"Our plan is to provide accommodation to mediapersons as well in the same colony," Paswan told TOI on Sunday. He said at least 50 houses would be earmarked for the purpose.
Paswan said some government quarters already exist on the plot but they would be demolished to make way for the new construction. "All houses will be constructed in a similar fashion," said Paswan who was inducted into the ministry in April.
He said the demolition of the old government quarters on the plot would start within six months and after that a tender would be floated for the new constructions.
"After this scheme has been implemented, there will be no dearth of houses," he said.
In the new colony, the houses may not be as huge with hall-size rooms and gardens as in the old constructions. In their place, multi-storey and modern apartments may come up. Paswan said he had already spoken to chief minister Nitish Kumar in this regard.
He also said that those living unauthorisedly in the government houses there have been asked to vacate the premises by June 15. If they fail to comply they will be thrown out by force, said Paswan.
