MoU Signed For Implementation Of Mukhya Mantri Kanya Suraksha Yojna (girl protection scheme)

A tri-partite MOU for the implementation of the Mukhya Mantri Kanya Suraksha Yojna (girls' protection scheme) was signed here on Saturday by the state government's welfare department, UTI and state Women's Development Corporation (WDC).

CM Nitish Kumar, whose brainchild this scheme is, was also present on the occasion. He said the scheme should be viewed in context of the continued efforts to empower women in Bihar. He said, "Under this scheme, more than 1.25 crore BPL families will be benefited and the future of at least seven lakh poor girls will be brightened every year."

Nitish said Bihar has shown the path to other states as far as empowerment of women is concerned by according 50 per cent reservation to the fair section in panchayat and local bodies and in the appointment of teachers. He hoped that the efforts initiated by his government will soon bear fruit and it would make a difference in the society.

Expressing concern over the sex ratio imbalance, he hoped that this scheme may also help check female foeticide and infanticide and accelerate the birth registration process. The scheme had been approved by the cabinet on November 22 last and was also mentioned in the report card of NDA government's two-year rule.

Nitish said the responsibility for its implementation has jointly been entrusted to the welfare department, UTI and WDC. The agreement was signed by principal secretary, welfare, Vijay Prakash and UTI Asset Management Company chairman-cum-managing director U K Sinha.

Under this scheme, Nitish said, Rs 2,000 will be deposited under UTI's Children Career Balanced Programme in favour of each girl child born in a BPL family on or after November 22, 2007. This benefit will be limited to a maximum of two girl children per family. The amount will be invested by the WDC of behalf of the state government and the fund has been provided to it.

On completion of 18 years, the amount equal to the maturity value will be paid to the girl child which would come around Rs 18,000.

In case of her death, during the intervening period the amount will be paid back to WDC. The CM said the birth of the girl child should be registered within 21 days and the family can apply for this benefit within three years of birth.
