A tri-partite MOU for the implementation of the Mukhya Mantri Kanya Suraksha Yojna (girls' protection scheme) was signed here on Saturday by the state government's welfare department, UTI and state Women's Development Corporation (WDC).
CM Nitish Kumar, whose brainchild this scheme is, was also present on the occasion. He said the scheme should be viewed in context of the continued efforts to empower women in Bihar. He said, "Under this scheme, more than 1.25 crore BPL families will be benefited and the future of at least seven lakh poor girls will be brightened every year."
Nitish said Bihar has shown the path to other states as far as empowerment of women is concerned by according 50 per cent reservation to the fair section in panchayat and local bodies and in the appointment of teachers. He hoped that the efforts initiated by his government will soon bear fruit and it would make a difference in the society.
Expressing concern over the sex ratio imbalance, he hoped that this scheme may also help check female foeticide and infanticide and accelerate the birth registration process. The scheme had been approved by the cabinet on November 22 last and was also mentioned in the report card of NDA government's two-year rule.
