People In Bihar Tie The Knot In The Name Of Lalu

In certain pockets of the state of Bihar, many people are getting married without waiting for an auspicious day or the lagan mahurat (the auspicious time for a wedding ceremony to begin) as per the Hindu calender.

These people are ardent followers and fans of the former chief minister of the state and Union Railway Minister, Lalu Prasad, and have invented their own lagan. They are calling it Lalu lagan.

One such family which is having a wedding without the auspicious timings are the Singhs.

The groom's father, Ram Naresh Singh says, Jaha ja rahe hai, waha ho raha hai Lalu lagan main." ("Wherever we go, everyone is getting married with Lalu lagan.")

A local RJD MLA, Bijendra Yadav adds, "Even Muslims have their weddings on any day they like and so we have also started having our weddings on any day. We have just started calling these days Lalu lagan, so that they become auspicious to us."

The Railway Minister's followers in central Bihar believe that Lalu's blessings are good enough to get people married off. And these out of season weddings are fast catching up, benefiting everyone in the loop.

A priest, Ajay Kumar Mridul, says, "Lalu ji ke naam se lagan chalta hai to hamare amdani ke saath samaj ka kalyan bhi hota hai. Ladka, ladki, dono party ka faida hai." (These weddings are conducted in the name of Lalu ji and are good for us moneywise and for the society as well.")

It seems as if Lalu magic is setting many a wedding bell tolling in Bihar.
