Army & State Start Green Drive In City - 50,000 Saplings Planted To Observe Van Mahotsav
The forest department has pledged to plant as many as 50,000 saplings to mark the celebrations of the 49th van mahotsav in the capital today. The department, in collaboration with the army, planted saplings at the Dipatoli Cantonment to mark the event. Chief minister Madhu Koda, along with deputy chief minister Sudhir Mahto and 23rd Infantry Division GOC Major General A.K. Singh, participated in the programme and planted saplings. The forest department has made the army its partner in the venture to help sustain the project. While the forest department provides different saplings, the army ensures that it nurtures it. The army has assured its full support to the programme to boost the ecology and environment of the state. The saplings produced by the department would comprise mostly fruit-bearing trees and will be planted along the streets of the capital. The saplings would also be planted on the highways across the state. Click On "Ful story" for More... By Tiwari, Section Ranchi Group Posted on Wed Jul 16, 2008 at 04:01:21 AM EST
Since the army will be backing the department, we are hopeful that the saplings will survive and the state will benefit, said a senior government officer attending the programme.
The 23rd Infantry Division GOC Major General A.K. Singh said the army is always conscious of the ecology and will do all to improve the environment. Singh, who is known to be fond of the greens, said the force would ensure that the programme is successful and the state has a rich growth of healthy trees in the near future. A small cultural programme was also organised by students of the Army Public School. The students enacted a skit to drive home the message of saving the environment. The students, through their drama, convinced spectators that trees are the source of a healthy ecology. Chief minister Madhu Koda praised the efforts of the army and said that the discipline of the force will ensure the success of the plantation drive. The army will definitely maintain the saplings at the initial stage, which is the most crucial part of the entire programme. "The plantation drive will also prove to be good for the people at large as they would have access to fruits and timber, which would cater to their personal needs," Koda said. The state Congress unit has, however, criticised the state government for organising the programme without any prior information to the public. Such programmes should be publicised for more participation. The masses should be involved in such programmes to make its objective successful, said Congress students' wing leader Matlub Imam Source: The Telegraph 16/July/2008
