All Is Not Well With Popular Temples Of Patna,Huge Irregularities Have Been Detected In Each Of Them

All is not well with popular temples of Patna which are being run by persons with doubtful credentials. Be it the famous Hanuman temple at city's Rajbanshinagar locality or Sri Sai Baba temple at Kankerbagh or the Sheetala Mandir at Agamkuan -- huge irregularities have been detected in each of them.

Take the case of Patna's tallest Hanuman Mandir at Rajbanshinagar locality. The Bihar State Board of Religious Trusts (BSBRT) recently issued a show-cause notice to the trustee of the temple to explain various irregularities. "The trustee has so far failed to reply to the notice within the stipulated period. The deadline ended on Tuesday. We are now contemplating a criminal prosecution against the trustee under Section 67 of the BSBRT Act," BSBRT administrator Kishore Kunal said.

Thousands of people, mainly bureaucrats and politicians, offer puja at this Hanuman temple daily which is located on Bailey Road in the vicinity of government quarters of VIP.

The condition of Sri Sai Baba temple at Kankerbagh is no better either. The BSBRT has also detected some technical fault in the trust deed of the temple. In view of the financial irregularities in the temple, the BSBRT had sent an audit team to assess its daily income and donations.

Patna City's Sheetala Mandir is also in bad shape. Last year, the BSBRT had assessed the actual income of the temples. The team had found that the daily income of the temple ranged from Rs 8,000 to Rs 9,000. Surprisingly, the temple had showed that its annual income was a meagre Rs 8,000, the team said.

The BSBRT administrator told TOI: "I have already requested Patna DM to provide some names of efficient people for managing these temples of Patna to maintain total transparency." The Patan Devi temple, one of the notable places of worship among the Hindus in the capital, is in a bad shape, too. Only a few days back, the BSBRT reconstituted the temple committee by appointing Devta Prasad Singh Chaudhary as its chairman. This temple, associated with capital city, is the major attraction during "Navratra" festival.

The story of most of other temples in Patna is more or less the same. Barring a few temples, the trustees and secretaries of most of the temples are involved in financial irregularities.

The BSBRT has detected huge irregularities in most of the temples owned by mahants and trustees.

Talking to TOI here on Wednesday, Kunal said: "Barring a few, the authorities of most of the temples are minting money, which is a gross violation of the rules of the board. Some of them are yet to register their temples."
