Games Publicity Out Of Officials' Radar, In Rush To Complete Khelgaon, Stadium And Other Facilities

Amid the rush to complete the Khelgaon, stadium and other facilities for the 34th National Games, officials concerned seem to have missd out on publicity aspects.

Sources in the Jharkhand Olympic Association (JOA) said about four and a half months are left before the national event is hosted in Hotwar but there has not been any awareness campaign to make people aware of the event and its significance.

"Except office-bearers and members of the various sports associations, no one seems to be even aware that the city is going to host such an important event," said the senior official.

The state Olympic association official vindicated his statement by referring to the way the Olympic Day Run was organised on June 30.

The publicity for Games was kicked off in 2005 with Olympic Day Run but this year's run put a dampener on the show. The route of the run was shortened and there was no hype either, the official said.

Recalling the June 2005 Olympic Day Run, he said: "The publicity drive began in the right manner on June 26, 2005, when a Jharkhand Run was organised. The then chief minister Arjun Munda, the then sports minister Sudesh Mahto and other dignitaries had participated in the event."

The event was co-ordinated and organised properly and attracted a sea of people.

"It was a well-planned effort in which participants started from four points in the city with a VIP leading the run at each point. Thousands of runners converged at Birsa stadium, where the host city contract was signed. The run was telecast live," he added.

Hundreds of banners, posters and stickers on the Games were made and distributed among the crowd in the districts to spread awareness.

"But the idea to spread awareness remains unfulfilled. Authorities know little about the stickers and posters. They seem to have disappeared. Only a handful can be seen on motorcycles and SUVs used by some of the senior office-bearers of the sports associations," said another sports official.

The office-bearers of the National Games Organising Committee (NGOC) have now started to understand that they need to launch an awareness programme before it is too late.

However, they are not sure if starting the publicity drive will be wise now, as has already set in. "We will launch the programme once the monsoon wanes," said M.K. Pathak, a senior NGOC functionary.

NGOC secretary (I) S.M. Hashmi said they would revive the publicity drive to make everyone aware of the Games."We will fix a date to launch the awareness campaign after consulting with officials of the Indian Olympic Association," he added.
