Is Patna University Going Back To 'dark Days'?
Even as academic activities have come to a standstill in Patna University for over three weeks due to strike by non-teaching employees, academics have expressed fears that the university may go back to the "dark days" it experienced before Dr Y V Simhadri took over as VC.
Already a large number of students have suffered as they have been unable to take admission to other universities for want of marksheets and other documents. The university has failed to issue these documents due to the ongoing strike of its non-teaching staff. "It is quite disturbing that neither the university administration nor the state government is making any effort to open the university and its colleges at this crucial juncture when hundreds of meritorious students need result sheets, institution leaving certificates and related documents to join courses in institutions across the country," said PU Senate member Sudhakar Prasad Singh. He said a large number of daily-wage employees and private security personnel are working in the University. Click on "Full Story" For More... "Important and urgent works like issuing results and certificates and processing admissions can be done with the help of officers, teachers and daily-wage non-teaching employees," he said and added the VC should direct the principals and HoDs to attend their respective colleges and departments and resume the rest of the admission work and teaching work.
Academics point out the VC should learn from the principal of Patna Women's College who has managed to run the college. "Not that strikers did not try to disturb the Patna Women's College, but the principal's able administration prevailed over the situation," said a teacher of Patna University. Patna University runs over 50 self-financing courses in which substantial investments have been made by students. These courses have also been adversely hit by the strike. Strangely, the government appears to be taking its own time in dealing with the matter. The second round of talks between the striking employees and the principal secretary of human resource department, Anjani Kumar Singh, took place on Monday. Source: Times News Network 23/July/2008
