Bihar Government likely to change marriage rules

In an effort to protect women from being deserted by NRI husbands, the Bihar Government is contemplating certain changes in its marriage rules. "The State Government is considering a proposal from the Law and Registration department to amend the existing marriage rules to issue separate marriage certificates to both the bride and groom," official sources said.

They said the amendment in the Bihar Special Marriage Rules will be possible within the next two months. The amendment would give more legal rights as in many cases, the man denies the marriage leaving his wife to fend for herself.

Legal experts, however, suggest that the State Government's move to protect legal rights of married women should be supplemented by enforcement of compulsory registration of marriages. "In Bihar, registration of marriage is still on the lower side," they claimed. The initial problem for a deserted woman was to prove the marriage and in this case registration of marriage helps a lot.
