Rly Board Approves Route Relay Interlocking (RRI) System Launch At Patna Jn
The Railway Board has approved the ambitious plan of Danapur division of East Central Railway (ECR) to construct the Route Relay Interlocking (RRI) system at the Patna Junction, Danapur and Jhajha stations.
This decision has been taken to ease out heavy traffic operation, besides improving further safety measures, said Danapur DRM B D Garg. According to Garg, the board has sanctioned about Rs 10 crore for Patna Junction while Rs 6 core each has been sanctioned for Danapur and Jhahja stations respectively. The railways have already constructed the RRI building at Patna Junction and the construction work of the RRI buildings is going on at Danapur and Jhajha stations, he said, adding the railways intend to make these RRI stations functional in the current fiscal year. Garg said though this system of advanced technology is available at several stations of the Indian Railways, it has become a must for Patna, Danapur and Jhajha stations in view of the increased traffic operations. The division hasbeen coping with the operation of about 110 pairs of passenger trains, including mail and express, either originating or passing through the mainline section of the division, he said.
Under the new system, monitoring of the train movements will be centralised and the possibilities of head-on-collision or any mishap within the periphery of these stations will be less. Besides, the RRI system also has the capacity to quickly clear the traffic movements. The entire system will be computerised and operated easily, Garg said. According to the DRM, the RRI system is the latest technology to deal with heavy traffic operations. There will be no manual pulling of lever either to lower signals or lock the railway crossing gates. With the touch of a button, the whole system will become functional. A huge tower has been built at Patna Junction while it is being built at Danapur and Jhajha stations to house the new system machinery. The new system will facilitate smooth movement of goods trains as well. It will save much time being spent in shunting of passenger train rakes and locomotives, he said. The DRM said the RRI equipment and machines are indigenous now. These machines would be installed soon at these places under the direct supervision of the technical experts. The division will thus improve safety on tracks with the installation of RRI system, he said. Source: Times News Network 27/Aug/2008
