New Generation Model Police Stations Soon In Each District of Bihar

By the end of next year, Bihar is going to have at least one new generation police station in each district which will appear vastly different from the dilapidated police stations visible in the state. They will be three storied, plush looking with terracota and much better furnished.

"We would start constructing these model police stations from the month of October this year. We have already called for the tenders," remarked ADG and Bihar Police Building Construction Corporation chairman-cum-managing director Ashok Kumar Gupta.

It will not only have a different look, but a different approach. They will be people-friendly having counselling rooms, waiting rooms, rooms for the women and children and separate toilets. They will have computer rooms and modern communication systems. Unlike many police stations, these model police stations will have high boundary walls with police guards on the top to deter Naxalite attacks. The four key officials of the police station will have their residence on the police station premises. There will be a barrack for police constables making the unit alert all the time for action.

The state government has sanctioned the cost of construction of these police stations from its own funds. The average cost of each modern police station, which will be located at the district headquarters, will be Rs 1.28 crore more than twice the amount given for the construction of an urban police station.

"These will be different police stations, a place where the people, including women, can enter without fear. They will function in a different atmosphere," said Gupta. He pointed out that the district SPs have been given the responsibility of monitoring the construction of these police stations.

Gupta said apart from the construction of 28 model police stations, the corporation is going to construct 34 rural police stations at the cost of Rs 40 lakh each and six urban police stations at the cost of Rs 60 lakh each under the Police Modernisation Scheme. "We will also be constructing 500 houses for the grassroot police personnel in the current financial year," Gupta added.

This should be a happy news for the infrastructure-starved police force of Bihar which is complaining about having to work in adverse conditions.
