Bihar's in, BCCI lays pitch for Lalu's cricket innings
He fancied playing soccer and, as he would himself admit, he was often pulled up for foul play. That was Lalu Prasad Yadav in school but now he is well on track to open innings on an altogether alien (read cricketing) turf. He may not actually don gloves and wield the willow to whack the leather ball but he has officially become entitled to run the cricketing administration in Bihar, courtesy BCCI.
With the BCCI formally granting associate membership to Lalu-led Bihar Cricket Association (BCA), the railway minister will obviously call the shots in cricketing matters as well. As an associate member of the BCCI, the BCA will have the privilege of selecting state teams to participate in U-16, U-19 and U-22 matches of the board. "We welcome the decision which was long overdue. Bihar does have a pool of talented cricketers and they will now get the platform to showcase their cricketing skill and talent," secretary of the BCA Ajay Sharma told ET. For nearly 8 years, the BCA had been fighting to stake membership of the BCCI even as players from the state continued to move to the adjoining Jharkhand to play in the BCCI matches. In a way, president of the Jharkhand State Cricket Association Amitabh Choudhary should be credited for accommodating players from Bihar in the Jharkhand cricket teams. It, however, remains to be seen how Mr Lalu Prasad will get into the act in his new avatar of the CEO of Bihar cricket. The murmuring has already started with his critics voicing their scepticism over his "cricketing sense and ability". "One can admire Lalu for his political clairvoyance and perspicacity but when it comes to cricket, I have my doubts whether he has the credentials to promote the game in Bihar. But since Lalu is part of the UPA, the recognition to BCA by the BCCI is actually a parting gift of the former BCCI president Sharad Pawar," said a critic who is actively associated with the rival Association of Bihar Cricket (ABC).
Dismissing these accusations as churlish, Mr Sharma instead defended Mr Lalu Prasad and said he had everything in him to run the cricketing administration effectively. "With his guidance and the support of the Bihar government, state will surely carve out a niche in the cricketing map of the country. I am confident that in two years Bihar will get the full fledged membership of the BCCI," claimed Mr Sharma. ET
