Rlys To Set Common Date For Exams With Eye On Better Local Hiring
![]() The railways ministry has proposed written examination for all vacant posts in railways across the country on the same date, breaking the tradition of recruitment boards conducting the test on different dates. If implemented, the proposal will affect 70% of applicants that appear for the tests on multiple dates. The 20 railway recruitment boards (RRB) advertise the vacancies separately and the candidates apply for the posts and appear for written examination one after another. “Several changes in the recruitment process have been proposed. Besides a common examination date for the test conducted by different RRBs, physical test before the written exam for candidates applying for a group D post has also been proposed,” a Rail Bhawan official said on condition of anonymity. Indian Railways, one of the largest employers in the world with over 14 lakh employees, recruits almost 60,000 hands annually. An estimated 45,000 employees retire every year from the public sector railway operator. source: Economic Times Rlys to set common date for exams with eye on better local hiring Click On "Full Story" For More... In her Budget speech in July, railways minister Mamata Banerjee had said that the recruitment process of the railways will be reviewed. The railways will develop a scheme for better representation of minorities, women and economically-backward classes in its recruitments, she had said. The railways is also looking at raising representation of local candidates in its jobs by introducing test paper for written examination in local languages. However, the proposal is likely to face opposition as certain languages are common to several states. For instance, Bengali is spoken in West Bengal, Assam, Tripura and Jharkhand.
“The railway minister is also toying with the idea of reserving seats for local candidates. This, however, may not be possible till the Constitution is amended,” another railway official said on the condition of anonymity
