4 Schools To Teach Bihar Cops Jungle Warfare

Worried over spreading tentacles of outlawed CPI (Maoist), the Centre has okayed four schools to teach jungle warfare to Bihar cops so that they could take on the ultra-leftists more effectively.

"Select Bihar police and Bihar Military Police (BMP) jawans will be given three months' training by retired Army officials at these schools," ADG (HQ) Neelmani told TOI on Monday, adding the Centre has allotted Rs 1.5 crore each for the schools which will come up at BMP-2 HQ at Dehri, BMP-3 HQ at Gaya, BMP-4 HQ at Dumraon and BMP-15 HQ at Valmikinagar.

These schools are likely to become functional by December. "The Centre has suggested a panel of retired Army officials for selection of trainers," Neelmani said and added the state home department will constitute a committee which will finally select the trainers and the trainees. The committee will also comprise the IG (operation) and the Brigadier of sub-area of Danapur Cantonment, and the number of trainees at each school would be 250 to 300.

The funds have already been disbursed to the commandants of the BMP units concerned for procuring necessary equipment and also to the Bihar Police Building Construction Corporation for developing required infrastructure. Quite a few meetings between the Army and state police officials have been held in this regard, Neelmani said and added the police jawans trained at these schools will be part of the state's Special Task Force and used exclusively to take on Maoists.

The Centre has also launched a programme in collaboration with the state for creating special infrastructure, including strengthening of police installations and construction of roads and helipads, in Naxalite-hit districts. The programme would be launched in Gaya and Aurangabad districts, to begin with. All expenses would be borne by the Centre which has already sent Rs 18.9 crore for the purpose.

The programme will be launched in Arwal, Jehanabad, Jamui, Rohtas, Bhojpur, East Champaran, West Champaran, Kaimur, Nalanda, Nawada, Patna and Sitamarhi districts -- in the next phase.
