Traffic Control Number One Priority: Patna DM
Patna District Magistrate Jitendra Kumar Sinha, at a meeting of the district's top police officials in Patna on Sunday once again reiterated his pledge to free Patna from illegal encroachment in an attempt to resolve the city's chronic traffic problem.
During the meeting that was also attended by Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Vineet Vinayak, the DM stated that resolving traffic problem was the number one priority for the Patna police and it had taken a series of steps to restore some sanity on the streets. Besides removing illegal occupiers from the streets, the district officials have decided to levy heavy fines on fruit vendors near the Income Tax Roundabout and other busy places where consumers park their vehicles on the streets to conduct purchasing. "There are special kiosks for the vendors near the IT Roundabout but they routinely ignore it to set up their stalls causing a traffic bottleneck in those areas," Sinha said. Situation near Raja Bazaar Sabzi Mandi is also completely out of control, the DM said adding the administration had decided to crackdown on the vendors illegally occupying the space by imposing heavy fines on them. The SSP, meanwhile, expressed his frustration with the tempo and bus driver organizations who, he said, had threatened to go on a strike if the district administration followed up on its promise of turning a number of streets one-way only. "Traffic has become a nightmare in Patna but we cannot solve all the problems of the city without the cooperation of its citizens," Vinayak said.
