Farmers To Learn New Methods On Agri Production

The Bihar government has kicked off a novel method to teach farmers modern techniques to boost agriculture production in the state.

In an attempt to give boost to agriculture, the government launched `Kisan Pathshala' (farmers' school) - a programme which will be regularly held to teach farmers about modern technology to enhance agriculture production.

Chief minister Nitish Kumar stressed the importance of using latest scientific techniques to increase production as land resources were diminishing even as human consumption was growing.

"By replacing the old methods with modern ones, we can increase the yield and avoid large use of chemicals which could affect land's yielding capacity," Nitish said.

Agriculture minister Renu Kumari Kushwaha said as many as 3,753 Kisan Pathshalas would be held across the state where agriculture scientists would explain to farmers the finer aspects of soil, seed, fertiliser, water, sowing and harvesting.

Nitish said farmers would be provided all necessary information on agriculture. They would also be trained to use the latest technology, he added.

The scheme was earlier christened "Farmers field school" but the chief minister insisted that the nomenclature should be in the local language.

"Someone suggested Kisan Vidyalaya as the name for the scheme but it was rejected on the plea that it should not meet the fate of Charwaha Vidyalaya," said Nitish while referring to the schools for shepherds once opened by the then chief minister, Lalu Prasad which soon were shut down.

The Union government informed that the growth rate in the country in 2005-07 was 9.4%, but during the same period it was 10.5% in Bihar, the CM disclosed and attributed the increase due to high growth in agriculture registered in the state.

Bihar is ranked third in the country in vegetable production and seventh in fruit production, deputy chief minister, Sushil Kumar Modi informed.

He further disclosed that earlier the fish production was 400 kg per hectare while now it has leaped to 800 kg per hectare. Similarly, the Compfed earlier collected five lakh litres of milk per day while the daily collection now stands at nine lakh litres per day.

Speaking on global warming, Nitish said the Copenhagen Summit was a failure due to the stubborn attitude of the developed nations who do not want to cut their carbon emission.

This, he said, was responsible for the global warming and adverse impact on environment. The CM also hit out at the Centre for the rise in prices and inflation.

Reacting to the statement of Union agriculture minister Sharad Pawar that state governments were not cooperating in checking hoarding, Nitish said his govenment had taken all precautionary measures but the price keeps shooting up because of the central government policies.

"Prices go up when Congress comes to power and it goes down when Congress is out of power," he said.
