While the Patna Book Fair will be opened on Friday, Arogya Swasth Mela will get under way two days later. The entire maidan is brimming with activities and people, entering from any side, have the option to stray into a mela.

The Regional Saras Mela which was inaugurated by chief minister Nitish Kumar will continue till December 14. Spread over 2.5 lakh square meter area, the fair has 250 stalls and they are occupied by women self-help groups (SHGs) who are displaying their products.

About 250 representatives of SHGs from 13 states are taking part in this fair which is being organised by the Union ministry for rural develoment and state rural development department with Patna commissioner as its nodal officer. The mela will also fecilitate the rural SHGs to get a market for their products.

Already several stalls have come up and more are expected in a day or two. They include handicraft, khadi and silk clothes and ready made garments, cottage industry products, vegetables and pickles. Rural development minister Bhagwan Singh Kushwaha said the government was providing them rural haats (bazaars) for sale of their products. He said in the first phase, three haats in each of the 29 districts would be opened and Rs 15 lakh would be spent on each haat. The govenment has earmarked Rs 6.52 crore for the purpose, he said.

The much-awaited Patna Book Fair will be thrown open after its inaguration by Govenor Debanand Konwar. The fair will have 800 stalls to be occupied by over 275 publishers from different parts of the country. This fair will continue till December 15.

Book fair is an annual feature and being held for the past 24 years. As far as vistors and sale is concerned this fair is only next to Kolkata book fair. "Last year we did business of Rs 3 crore which shows that people still love to read," said book fair chairman H L Gulati.

A media seminar will be an added attraction of the fair which is being hosted by Advantage Media Academy on December 12. "Some prominent media personalities will attend the seminar which will focus on challenges and opportunities in media industry," said Advantage Group MD Khurshid Ahmad.

On Decmber 6 a four-day fair is being jointly held by Union ministry of health and family welfare and Bihar government. Christened as Arogya Swasth Mela, it will exhibit and provide different information and facilities related to ayurveda, unani and homoeopathy treatment.

During the same period, a musical Ramayan Katha is also being held in the maidan where Acharya Sudarshan will deliver religious discourse. All the melas, except book fair, have free entry. The entry ticket for book fair is Rs 5 but it will be free for children and school and college students.
