Dispose Of Garbage For Rs 15/mth

Residents of the city's New Capital Area would soon have an ultra-modern system in place to collect and dispose of their garbage.

The Patna Municipal Corporation (PMC) has roped in the services of a private player which would undertake the door-to-door garbage collection work and also transport it to the dumping ground at Ramachak on the outskirts of the city on Patna-Gaya road.

The Haryana-based agency has been selected after a competitive bidding. It has the experience of delivering similar services in cities like Indore and Kanpur.

To avail of the service, each household would have to pay the PMC a fixed monthly rental of Rs 15. In most of the cities of comparable size, this service is available for Rs 30 a month.

Commercial establishments would have to pay a higher rental. Depending on the garbage generated by such establishments, the rentals for them could be anything between Rs 50 and Rs 500 per month.

The New Capital Area, according to the PMC, is from Uma cinema hall in east to the Khagaul canal on Bailey Road in west and the Ganga bank from Mahendru Ghat to Digha Ghat in north to Patna-Gaya railway line in south. The new system for this area is likely to be in place by January next year.

"Based on the feedback from the New Capital Area, the system may be introduced in other parts of the city later," PMC commissioner K Senthil Kumar told TOI.

The municipal corporation would make payment to the service provider on the basis of the volume of garbage dumped at Ramachak. A computerised weigh bridge is being set up at the dumping ground for the purpose. "We would pay the service provider Rs 728 for every tonne of garbage dumped," Kumar said, adding agencies providing such services in Delhi charge something around Rs 1,400 for each tonne of garbage. "It was due to competitive bidding that we were offered a lower rate," he said.

The vehicles used for garbage collection would be fitted with global positioning system (GPS)-enabled instruments. A control room at the PMC office would keep a watch on the movement of these vehicles with the help of GPS signals.
