In yet another incident of babus making a mockery of law and order, an IAS officer here publicly threatened a traffic sergeant for asking her to pay a fine for parking her official vehicle in the middle of a road.

The officer in question, Rashmi Verma, was spotted parking her official vehicle in the middle of a busy road in Patna - the capital city of Bihar. Subsequently the traffic sergeant on duty confronted her and asked her to pay a fine as per the law.

However, instead of paying the fine the lady called up a senior officer of the traffic police to complain against the sergeant.

Verma, who is currently posted as the Chief Secretary in the Bihar Tourism Department, threatened the traffic policeman with dire consequences for daring to ask her to pay the fine.

The sergeant Suresh Kumar finally succumbed to pressure from his seniors and with "folded hand" let the madam go.

When confronted by Zee News, the Patna Superintendent of Police tried to hush up the matter. "There is nothing in this matter that should be probed further. We have achieved our aim which was clearing the traffic, hence the matter ended then and there," the SP said.

State Chief Minster Nitish Kumar was equally dismissive about the incident.

"I do not know anything about the incident," said Kumar, who was once shown threatening a civil servant in full public glare for not recognising him.

Rules are only for the subjects and not for Rulers (none / 0) (#1)

When will Indians get out of "I am above the law syndrome"?

Recently even the President of the US had to call up a police officer, and publicly praise him for his work. But in India, and for that matter in Bihar, the traffic police sergeant had "to fold his hands", as if he/she was at fault and not Ms Verma.

This incident could have had a "Positive outcome". Think with me for a moment, that if Rashmi Verma, had paid the fine, and appreciated the officer for upholding the traffic law and thus fulfilling her/his duty. In this case, the traffic sergeant would have been impressed by her law abiding spirit and probably would have even told others about such deeds. But alas, that was not to be. We are Indians, and we consider that laws are meant for others and not for us (more so, if we hold some important government portfolios). It is high time that we should go in for a change of mindset.
