The Bihar government is working out a plan to freeze the sale and purchase of land in and around ancient Vaishali region to make it a dedicated heritage zone. Four important archaeological sites -- Vishalgarh, Ashokan pillar, Buddha's relic stupa and Abhishek Pushkarni (sacred tank) -- are located within the vicinity of three kms in ancient Vaishali region.

This region would be developed as a heritage zone to attract foreign tourists. "This region should not be crowded like Bodh Gaya. This should be developed as a dedicated heritage zone," CM Nitish Kumar told officials during his four-day Pravas Yatra at Vaishali.

The CM instructed the divisional commissioner to think on those lines for freezing the sale and purchase of land in this region to maintain its sanctity. He asked officials to prepare a master plan to develop the entire region as an international site.

Recently, a large number of buildings, hotels and monasteries have come up in and around the ancient Vaishali. A resident of Vaishali Ram Pravesh said that the cost of the land has increased manifold in recent years. A large number of people are buying lands to set up hotels, mini restaurants in the nearby region.
Not only hotels, but several monasteries such as of Sri Lanka, Vietnam and Thailand have come up in the vicinity of the ancient Vaishali. A new hotel Siddharth is also coming up. "We do not want this region to be crowded like Bodh Gaya. The beauty and sanctity of the site should be maintained for the pilgrim tourists," Nitish told mediapersons at Vaishali.

Nitish has also directed officials to develop landscape and proper parking in and around the Vishwa Shanti Stupa in view of the increase in the flow of tourists, particular from South East Asian countries. The entire area would also be properly fenced.

The famous Lion Pillar at Kolhua, built by Ashoka, is one of the biggest attractions. Vishalgarh, a huge mound with a circumference of about one km, is said to be the ancient Parliament House.

Abhishek Pushkarni (sacred tank) located near the Buddha's Relic Stupa has been renovated. For the first time, cleaning of the tank was done recently. Before coronation of a king, the sacred water of this holy tank was sprinkled on him.

Another important Jain site in Vaishali is Kundalpur, located about two km north east of Vishalgarh.
