Bihar Seeks Ban On Export Of Milk Powder

The cabinet sub-committee on price rise headed by deputy chief minister Sushil Kumar Modi on Friday called on the Centre to immediately ban the export of casein and milk powder. The decision follows the warning by the Union food minister, Sharad Pawar, that the country may witness shortage of milk in the days to come.

It also asked the Centre to increase export duties as pre-emptive measures to prevent milk scarcity in the country.
Modi said that though the availability of milk is adequate and there was no threat of an immediate price hike, the Centre should be proactive in discouraging the export of casein and the raw material for cattle feed to cool down prices of milk and milk products.
Meanwhile, the Cooperative Milk Federation has decided not to raise the prices of milk in the near future as only late last month it has effected increase in price by Rs two per kilolitre. In the last four years the prices of milk has increased by 80 per cent. For example the cow milk of Comfed is now priced at Rs 24 against Rs 14 till 2005. Similarly the price of milk products have also increased in the state even before the present warning of milk shortage was issued by the Centre.
