IIT Nursery In Bihar To Grow Into Super 60

Meritorious but poor students aspiring for admission to the IITs can take heart. The Super 30 programme, which makes the IIT entrance a cakewalk for 30 poor students from Bihar every year, will soon turn into ` Super 60' -- it will increase its intake from the current year and admit students from other states as well.

Programme founder and mathematician Anand Kumar promised as much to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Wednesday, when the two met in New Delhi.

" I want to expand my programme to include more than 100 students. But the problem is in finding talented Class X students from the poor and downtrodden sections," Kumar said.

Unlike other institutes, Super 30 gives 11- months coaching only to students from the impoverished sections of society, free of cost.

They are also provided accommodation with food.

Kumar runs the programme without financial support from the government or any private agency.

Since it was started in 2003, 186 Bihar students made it to various IITs under Super 30.

To resolve the problem of getting intelligent Class X students, Kumar proposes to start a school for the poor -- so that the talented get the " right impetus" at an early age.

" Most poor students drop out from school at an early stage and get jobs to support their families.

Therefore, I want to run a school with a hostel," he told the PM. Kumar also suggested reforms in the secondary education system to attract the best brains to He also wants to open a school for the poor the sciences and engineering.

" If secondary education is weak, students suffer the most.

I can say this from experience," he said.

To produce outstanding scientists, Kumar suggested that two sets of syllabi should be introduced at the secondary school level -- one for ` ordinary' students and the other for ` gifted' students.

" The syllabus for bright students should provide nonroutine challenging problems so that they get an insight into the subjects at an early stage," he said.

According to Kumar, the government should run free residential coaching programmes on the lines of Super 30 for talented students from rural background.

This, he said, should not be confined to coaching for the IITs.

Kumar said many questions asked in the IIT entrance were of ` olympiad level', which rural students found difficult to solve even if they had a sound knowledge of Class XII syllabus.

Therefore, problems at the Class XII level should be conceptual and analytical, he added.

The Super 30 founder also wants the number of attempts at the IIT exam confined to two, with students from poor background being permitted at least three chances.

Currently, the IITs allow two chances to all types of students to crack the test.

He also said students should be asked to mark answers in the Optical Response Sheet ( ORS) with a black pen instead of an HB pencil to avoid tampering.
