Help For Women Now At Toll-Free Number
Patna was the state's first district where a Helpline for women was opened and hundreds of women have benefited from it, said Patna DM Jitendra Kumar Sinha while launching a toll-free number of the Helpline (1800 3456 247) in its office at Indira Bhawan on Bailey Road on Monday.
The Helpline is being run since 1999 under the Mukhyamantri Nari Shakti Yojana. For two years, UNICEF supported it. Now, it is being run in all the 38 districts by the government. The toll-free number has been started in 22 districts. Admitting lack of adequate infrastructure facilities with the centre, the DM said at least two more vehicles have to be provided to the Helpline to ferry the aggrieved. Congratulating the team for its good work, he said 352 cases have been solved so far. "Problems were there earlier too but many incidents went unreported due to lack of awareness among women about their rights and, also, the absence of a platform for redressal of their grievances," he said. Referring to the increased number of cases with the Helpline, Women Development Corporation MD N Vijayalakshmi said the figures do not necessarily mean rise in the cases of atrocities. "It should rather be seen as a positive trend that more and more women are coming forward to take a stand for a safer and better tomorrow for themselves," she said and added very soon workshops will be organized to train other stake holders like the police, lawyers and other government officials to sensitize them towards women- related issues.
The DMs and SPs will also be asked to cooperate, Vijayalakshmi said as she admitted there was still a long way to go.
"I am really indebted to this centre. My husband used to neglect and torture me physically as he was having an affair. I was depressed. After these people came to my rescue and counselled my husband, our marital life is normal now. He even gives me Rs 15,000 to run the house," said Rajni (name changed) who was also present at the launch of the toll-free number.
